Professional Experience:
Desmond spent 30 years serving in the Republic of Singapore Navy, eventually becoming Head of Maritime Security. His military career equipped him with extensive experience in leadership, communication, team building and operational management. After leaving the Navy, he obtained his real estate salesperson licence and joined PropNex Realty. His practical investment experience, combined with his ability to develop structured processes and mentor others, helped him establish a successful property advisory career. He subsequently achieved multiple industry accolades, including five consecutive PropNex Millionaire achievements, while expanding his organisation to approximately 120 property consultants.
Turning Point:
A significant turning point came during the Asian Financial Crisis, when Desmond recognised opportunities in the depressed property market. After selling his first HDB flat for approximately S$388,000, having purchased it for around S$100,000, he used the proceeds to invest in private properties. With freehold apartments available at comparatively affordable prices, he adopted a strategy of purchasing properties whose rental income could cover their mortgage payments. These investments gradually provided the financial security that allowed him to leave the Navy after three decades, transforming employment from a financial necessity into a personal choice.
What He Does Now:
Today, Desmond is a Senior Associate Group District Director at PropNex Realty, helping clients make informed property decisions based on affordability, market conditions and long-term financial objectives. Rather than concentrating solely on transactions, he encourages buyers to consider their future housing requirements, retirement plans and financial commitments.
He also mentors property consultants through structured training and leadership development, sharing practical strategies that help them establish sustainable careers. Desmond remains particularly concerned about housing affordability for younger Singaporeans and advocates responsible financial planning, patience and disciplined asset accumulation.
