Overview:

Leonard Yeoh is the Managing Partner of Tay & Partners, a prominent Malaysian law firm, with around three decades of legal experience specialising in litigation and dispute resolution. Having represented clients in courts across Malaysia and Singapore, as well as in regional arbitrations, Leonard has developed a reputation for combining legal expertise with sound judgement and persuasive advocacy. He believes that successful litigation is not simply about winning cases, but helping businesses resolve disputes, protect their interests and move forward with greater certainty.

Professional Experience:

Leonard has spent more than two decades with Tay & Partners, where he has played an important role in developing the firm’s dispute resolution practice. His extensive experience includes commercial litigation, shareholder disputes, employment matters and domestic and international arbitration. He has appeared before courts at various levels in Malaysia and Singapore, representing corporate clients and multinational organisations.

His professional achievements include recognition among Asia’s Top 30 Litigators for 2026 by Asian Legal Business and induction into The Legal 500 Hall of Fame for Dispute Resolution. He has also held leadership positions in international legal associations, including Lawyers Associated Worldwide and the Inter-Pacific Bar Association.

Turning Point:

A significant turning point came during the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis, when Leonard observed how economic uncertainty affected businesses and increased the demand for dispute resolution. While previously successful practices struggled, litigation became increasingly important as companies faced unpaid debts, contractual disagreements and financial pressures.

This experience reinforced his decision to pursue litigation and helped him recognise the profession’s wider purpose. Over time, he also discovered that legal disputes often involve emotions, broken relationships and personal fears that cannot be resolved through legal arguments alone. These experiences shaped his belief that effective lawyers must understand human nature as well as the law.

What He Does Now:

Today, Leonard leads Tay & Partners while continuing to advise clients on complex litigation and dispute resolution matters. He helps businesses evaluate whether to pursue legal proceedings or negotiate settlements, taking into account financial costs, commercial consequences and long-term interests. He also focuses on mentoring younger lawyers, giving them greater responsibility and preparing the next generation of leaders within the firm.

As artificial intelligence transforms legal research and document preparation, Leonard believes that human judgement, persuasion and professional accountability will remain essential. Beyond his career, he increasingly values meaningful relationships, personal wellbeing and appreciating the people who contribute to his life.
