Professional Experience:
Andy began playing football at youth level before progressing to become a professional footballer with Woodlands Wellington. After five years in professional football, he eventually embarked on a very different career. He started mobile barbering around 10 years ago, at a time when the concept was still relatively unfamiliar in Singapore. Rather than competing directly with traditional barbershops, Andy developed his service around bringing grooming directly to clients who value convenience or have difficulty travelling.
Turning Point:
One of Andy’s defining experiences came when he was asked to cut the hair of a friend’s father who had suffered a stroke and was bedbound. His wife, a nurse specialising in neurology, taught him how to position and turn the client safely. The man passed away a few days later, and the experience changed Andy’s perspective on barbering. He realised that something as simple as a haircut could provide dignity and care to someone who could no longer visit a conventional barbershop. This helped shape FitBarber into a service centred not merely on haircuts, but on serving people.
What He Does Now:
Today, Andy operates FitBarber and travels to clients in their homes, hospitals and other locations. His clientele includes elderly and bedbound individuals as well as children with special needs; he regularly serves more than 90 children with special needs. Andy is also working towards building a network of mobile barbers across different parts of Singapore, allowing appointments to be allocated to barbers located closer to each client. His longer-term vision is to make mobile barbering readily accessible throughout Singapore, particularly for people who may struggle to visit a conventional barbershop.
